Though the term ego is widely used in todays literature and the workplace, the psychological apparatus as defined by Sigmund consists of three distinct parts. These include:
1. Id - the part of the personality which is inherited and present at birth. It comprises of our need for food, water and other basic needs.
2. Ego - is the organized part of an individuals mental structure and comprises of the perceptual, cognitive, defensive part of the mind. It consists of common sense and reasoning which we use to make decisions.
3. The Superego or conscience is the unconscious part of the mind which criticizes and prohibits a person from taking certain actions based on his or her value systems, upbringing or ideals. It is part of an individuals quest for perfection.
